Carpet pilling tends to occur more with loop-pile carpets and is caused by the tearing or breaking of the top fibres of the loop, by abrasive action on the surface of the carpet resulting in a “fuzzy hairy-like appearance”, usually in the main areas of usage. i.e. doorways, stair winders, stairs and in front of the settee, commonly known as the TV shuffle.
By cutting away the offending “fuzz” with a pair of scissors the pilling can be easily removed.
It is not seen as a manufacturing fault, but rather as day to day usage of the carpet.
Major causes of pilling can be things like footwear with high traction soles and upright vacuum cleaners.
